[𝐌𝐅𝐈𝐍 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝟒𝟑] The Role Of Social Media In Financial And Housing Market Booms – Evidence From China And Solution For Vietnam

We show that the housing market social media sentiment index, constructed from 800,000 posts on Weibo by quantifying the tone of social media posts between 2010 and 2020, can predict house price changes across the 35 largest cities in China. A 1% increase in accumulated social media sentiment increases house prices by 0.81% the following quarter after controlling for all measurable economic fundamentals. Our results cannot be explained by the announced policy changes, unobserved fundamentals, or censorship bias and have survived a large number of robustness checks. These results yield support for theories of social learning found in the literature and indicate that policymakers need to pay close attention to the sentiment contained in social media.
